Selling Unit Substations

Whole lineups are worth more than the sum

A double-ended 2000/2667 kVA unit substation with matched switchgear and a functioning tie breaker is a system somebody can reinstall. Split into pieces it becomes three separate used-parts sales. We will always quote the intact lineup higher, so tell us before your demolition contractor starts cutting.

Documentation raises the number

One-lines, schedule drawings, relay settings and factory test reports travel with the equipment and add meaningfully to what a downstream buyer will pay. If the drawings are in a plant engineering file, dig them out — that folder is worth money.

Splitting and rigging out

Unit substations are heavy, long and awkward, usually installed with no thought given to ever removing them. Our crews cut bus connections, split sections at the factory joints, skate them out and crate loose parts. We handle the wall openings and the cribbing. Freight and rigging are on us.

Questions About These Units

Will you buy just the transformer section?
Yes, though the lineup as a whole is usually worth more. If another buyer already took the switchgear we will still quote the transformer.
Our plant is mid-demolition. Is it too late?
Call before more is cut. Intact equipment is worth multiples of cut equipment, and we can often work directly with your demolition contractor's schedule.

Other Equipment We Buy

180–240 units in inventory rotation

Padmount Transformers

Pad-mounted distribution transformers are the single most liquid item we buy. A dead-front loop-feed unit in the 75 to 2500 kVA range with a legible nameplate and a sound tank can be priced from photographs the same day.

75 kVA – 5000 kVA
300+ oil-filled units purchased annually

Oil-Filled Transformers

Liquid-filled units — mineral oil, silicone or ester — from 25 kVA pole-mounts up to 20 MVA power transformers. Oil is not a problem for us; containment, testing and disposal are part of what we do.

25 kVA – 20 MVA
120–160 dry-type units handled per year

Dry-Type Transformers

Ventilated, sealed and cast-coil dry-type units from 15 kVA control transformers up to 5000 kVA unit substation sections. Copper-wound units carry a materially higher offer than aluminum.

15 kVA – 5000 kVA
40–60 substation-class units per year

Substation Transformers

Station-class and power transformers from 1 MVA to 100 MVA, including units with load tap changers, radiator banks and conservator tanks. These are heavy-haul projects and we run them end to end.

1 MVA – 100 MVA
Lots of 10 to 400 units purchased at a time

Pole-Mount Transformers

Single-phase and three-phase overhead distribution transformers, 5 kVA to 500 kVA. This is a volume item — we buy them by the pallet and by the trailer load out of utility and co-op surplus programs.

5 kVA – 500 kVA
60–90 cast-coil units per year

Cast-Coil Transformers

Epoxy-encapsulated cast-coil units built for harsh, humid and high-load environments. Because they were expensive new and are durable used, they hold value better than any other dry-type.

300 kVA – 10 MVA
