Cast-Coil Transformer Buyers

Epoxy-encapsulated cast-coil units built for harsh, humid and high-load environments. Because they were expensive new and are durable used, they hold value better than any other dry-type.

Selling Cast-Coil Transformers

Why cast-coil holds value

Cast-coil construction was specified where an oil-filled unit was unacceptable and a standard ventilated dry-type would not survive: paper mills, wastewater plants, offshore and marine installations, mines, high-humidity process areas. Those units cost a great deal new, and a used one with sound coils is a genuine bargain to the next buyer. That flows back into our offer.

Inspecting the coils

The failure mode to look for is cracking or crazing in the epoxy, particularly at the coil ends and around the tap leads. Surface dust and discoloration are cosmetic. Send close photographs of the coil faces and we can usually assess condition without a site visit.

Where they come from

Most cast-coil units reach us through plant closures, process line changes and data center capacity refreshes. Because the equipment is often in a tight electrical room within a running facility, removal scheduling matters more than price to most sellers — and scheduling is something we control.

Questions About These Units

A coil is visibly cracked. Still worth calling?
Yes. A cracked coil lowers the unit from resale to salvage, but salvage on a large cast-coil unit is still a real number, and the removal is still our cost.
Do you buy cast-coil units without enclosures?
Yes. Open core-and-coil units pulled out of a lineup are common and we quote them the same way.

Other Equipment We Buy

180–240 units in inventory rotation

Padmount Transformers

Pad-mounted distribution transformers are the single most liquid item we buy. A dead-front loop-feed unit in the 75 to 2500 kVA range with a legible nameplate and a sound tank can be priced from photographs the same day.

75 kVA – 5000 kVA
300+ oil-filled units purchased annually

Oil-Filled Transformers

Liquid-filled units — mineral oil, silicone or ester — from 25 kVA pole-mounts up to 20 MVA power transformers. Oil is not a problem for us; containment, testing and disposal are part of what we do.

25 kVA – 20 MVA
120–160 dry-type units handled per year

Dry-Type Transformers

Ventilated, sealed and cast-coil dry-type units from 15 kVA control transformers up to 5000 kVA unit substation sections. Copper-wound units carry a materially higher offer than aluminum.

15 kVA – 5000 kVA
40–60 substation-class units per year

Substation Transformers

Station-class and power transformers from 1 MVA to 100 MVA, including units with load tap changers, radiator banks and conservator tanks. These are heavy-haul projects and we run them end to end.

1 MVA – 100 MVA
Lots of 10 to 400 units purchased at a time

Pole-Mount Transformers

Single-phase and three-phase overhead distribution transformers, 5 kVA to 500 kVA. This is a volume item — we buy them by the pallet and by the trailer load out of utility and co-op surplus programs.

5 kVA – 500 kVA
25–40 complete lineups per year

Unit Substations

Complete primary-transformer-secondary lineups: incoming section, transformer, and low-voltage switchgear or switchboard bolted as one assembly. We buy them whole and we buy them by the section.

300 kVA – 5000 kVA
