Padmount Transformer Buyers

Pad-mounted distribution transformers are the single most liquid item we buy. A dead-front loop-feed unit in the 75 to 2500 kVA range with a legible nameplate and a sound tank can be priced from photographs the same day.

Selling Padmount Transformers

What determines the offer

Four things drive a padmount number: kVA rating, primary voltage class, whether the unit is dead-front loop-feed or live-front, and the state of the tank and pad. Loop-feed dead-front units in 12.47 kV and 13.8 kV classes move fastest because they match the most common utility and campus distribution systems in the country. A 1000 kVA 12470-480V dead-front unit with a clean nameplate is a different conversation entirely from scrap weight.

Tank integrity and oil

Surface rust and faded paint do not hurt the offer. Active oil weeping at the base weld, a cracked bushing, or a tank that has been sitting flooded does. Tell us what you see. If the unit is pre-1980 we will ask about PCB labeling before quoting, and we handle the testing and manifesting ourselves at our cost.

Removal from the pad

Padmounts are bolted or simply seated on a concrete pad with primary and secondary conduit entering from below. Our crews cut, cap and pull, then lift the unit onto a flatbed with a boom truck or rough-terrain forklift. You do not need to arrange a crane, hire riggers or coordinate a heavy-haul carrier — that is our scope and our cost.

Questions About These Units

Do you buy failed padmount transformers?
Yes. A failed unit still carries core steel, copper or aluminum windings, a usable tank and often a salvageable tap changer. We price failed units below working units but well above scrap, and we still cover the removal.
What is the smallest padmount you will pick up?
A single 75 kVA unit is worth a truck if it is on our lane. Below that, or for a single unit in a remote location, we will usually ask you to hold it until we can combine it with other freight.

Other Equipment We Buy

300+ oil-filled units purchased annually

Oil-Filled Transformers

Liquid-filled units — mineral oil, silicone or ester — from 25 kVA pole-mounts up to 20 MVA power transformers. Oil is not a problem for us; containment, testing and disposal are part of what we do.

25 kVA – 20 MVA
120–160 dry-type units handled per year

Dry-Type Transformers

Ventilated, sealed and cast-coil dry-type units from 15 kVA control transformers up to 5000 kVA unit substation sections. Copper-wound units carry a materially higher offer than aluminum.

15 kVA – 5000 kVA
40–60 substation-class units per year

Substation Transformers

Station-class and power transformers from 1 MVA to 100 MVA, including units with load tap changers, radiator banks and conservator tanks. These are heavy-haul projects and we run them end to end.

1 MVA – 100 MVA
Lots of 10 to 400 units purchased at a time

Pole-Mount Transformers

Single-phase and three-phase overhead distribution transformers, 5 kVA to 500 kVA. This is a volume item — we buy them by the pallet and by the trailer load out of utility and co-op surplus programs.

5 kVA – 500 kVA
25–40 complete lineups per year

Unit Substations

Complete primary-transformer-secondary lineups: incoming section, transformer, and low-voltage switchgear or switchboard bolted as one assembly. We buy them whole and we buy them by the section.

300 kVA – 5000 kVA
60–90 cast-coil units per year

Cast-Coil Transformers

Epoxy-encapsulated cast-coil units built for harsh, humid and high-load environments. Because they were expensive new and are durable used, they hold value better than any other dry-type.

300 kVA – 10 MVA
