Transformer Scrap Value vs Resale Value
What determines a transformer's value: kVA, voltage class, winding material, oil status and condition. Resale value usually beats scrap by several times. Free assessment, 954-740-1983.

Scrap Weight Versus Recoverable Equipment
Two completely different pricing models
Scrap value is arithmetic: estimated copper or aluminum content, plus core steel, plus tank steel, times current commodity prices, minus processing and minus oil disposal. Resale value is a judgment about whether someone will put the unit back into service. The gap between the two is not marginal. A serviceable transformer in a common rating and voltage class routinely brings several times its scrap-weight value, because the buyer is comparing it against a new unit with a long lead time, not against a pile of metal.
Why lead times sustain the gap
New transformer lead times have remained long enough that used and surplus equipment holds unusually firm value. A buyer who needs capacity in months rather than years will pay for an existing unit. That demand is precisely what allows us to cover the crane, the riggers and the freight and still write a real check: the equipment is worth recovering, not merely worth hauling away.
Winding material is the biggest single variable
Copper-wound units carry materially higher value than aluminum-wound units of the same rating, both as recoverable material and in resale. Nameplates do not always state winding material directly; weight relative to rating, manufacturer and vintage are usually enough for us to infer it.
What pushes a unit toward the scrap number
An illegible or missing nameplate, a cracked or weeping tank, shattered bushings, evidence of an internal fault or through-fault damage, PCB-suspect fluid requiring licensed disposal, and unusual voltage combinations with a shallow resale pool. Any one of these narrows the buyer pool; several together mean the unit is honestly worth its materials, and we will tell you so.
How to Find Out Which Category Yours Is In
Send the nameplate before you call a metals yard
It costs nothing and takes one photograph. If your unit is worth materially more as equipment than as metal we will say so and quote it. If it genuinely is a materials unit, we will say that too — and we will still quote it, with the removal included, which a metals yard generally will not do.
Weigh the removal cost into any comparison
A scrap quote is almost always delivered-to-yard. Before comparing it to anything, add the crane or boom truck, the rigging crew, the permits and the heavy-haul trucking — frequently thousands of dollars on a single station-class unit. Our number is net to you with all of that already absorbed, and it is paid before the unit is loaded.
Equipment We Buy
Padmount Transformers
Pad-mounted distribution transformers are the single most liquid item we buy. A dead-front loop-feed unit in the 75 to 2500 kVA range with a legible nameplate and a sound tank can be priced from photographs the same day.
75 kVA – 5000 kVA300+ oil-filled units purchased annuallyOil-Filled Transformers
Liquid-filled units — mineral oil, silicone or ester — from 25 kVA pole-mounts up to 20 MVA power transformers. Oil is not a problem for us; containment, testing and disposal are part of what we do.
25 kVA – 20 MVA120–160 dry-type units handled per yearDry-Type Transformers
Ventilated, sealed and cast-coil dry-type units from 15 kVA control transformers up to 5000 kVA unit substation sections. Copper-wound units carry a materially higher offer than aluminum.
15 kVA – 5000 kVA40–60 substation-class units per yearSubstation Transformers
Station-class and power transformers from 1 MVA to 100 MVA, including units with load tap changers, radiator banks and conservator tanks. These are heavy-haul projects and we run them end to end.
1 MVA – 100 MVALots of 10 to 400 units purchased at a timePole-Mount Transformers
Single-phase and three-phase overhead distribution transformers, 5 kVA to 500 kVA. This is a volume item — we buy them by the pallet and by the trailer load out of utility and co-op surplus programs.
5 kVA – 500 kVA25–40 complete lineups per yearUnit Substations
Complete primary-transformer-secondary lineups: incoming section, transformer, and low-voltage switchgear or switchboard bolted as one assembly. We buy them whole and we buy them by the section.
