Selling a Transformer in Seattle

Our purchasing desk covers Seattle and the surrounding King County area for surplus and decommissioned electrical transformers. We are interested in single units and in fleets — a 500 kVA padmount behind a strip center, forty dry-types out of an office retrofit, a failed 25 MVA station transformer. All of it priced from the nameplate, all of it removed at our cost.

The Washington market for used transformers

What comes available in this state is shaped by what it runs: aerospace manufacturing around Everett and Renton, aluminum smelting and data centers along the Columbia River, agricultural processing in the Yakima Valley, and shipbuilding and naval facilities. On the utility side, Puget Sound Energy, Seattle City Light, Avista, Chelan and Grant County PUDs all operate here, and surplus programs and system upgrades release both distribution and station-class equipment. Moving it out of Seattle means I-5 and I-90 with the Ports of Seattle, Tacoma and Longview handling heavy-lift, plus Columbia River barge. Notably, Columbia River hydro relicensing, PUD surplus programs and the aerospace supplier base together give Washington a steady flow of both station-class and industrial units.

Volume, access and night work in a dense metro

A metro the size of Seattle generates transformer turnover continuously rather than seasonally — commercial retrofits, hospital and campus expansions, data center capacity refreshes, and demolition on a permanent rolling schedule. That volume is good for you: we run trucks through this market often enough that your unit rarely waits for a lane to open. The real constraint here is access, not distance. Downtown removals mean loading-dock windows, street occupancy permits, elevator and floor-loading limits, and often a night or weekend lift to avoid tying up traffic. We plan for that as standard scope and we pay for the permits.

Fleet purchases out of Seattle facilities

Large institutional sellers in Seattle rarely have one transformer; they have a list. When a refresh or a consolidation releases eight, twenty or eighty units, we price the group rather than negotiating unit by unit, and we phase pickups to match your commissioning or demolition sequence instead of demanding one clean sweep. That is usually worth more to a facilities team than the last few dollars per unit.

Removal and Value

What our crew brings to Seattle

A removal in Seattle is scoped from your photographs before anyone mobilizes, so the crew arrives with the right equipment rather than improvising. Depending on the unit that means a boom truck or rough-terrain forklift for a padmount, machine skates and stair gear for an indoor dry-type, or a hydraulic crane and multi-axle lowboy for station-class equipment. We bring rigging hardware, spill containment sized to the unit's oil volume, and our own insurance certificates naming your entity. You provide site access and a de-energized, disconnected unit; we do the rest.

What sets your number in Seattle

Five things, in roughly this order: kVA rating, voltage class, winding material, fluid and condition. A 1000 kVA 12470–480V dead-front padmount with a legible nameplate and a sound tank is a resale asset and gets priced as one. The same rating with a cracked bushing and a weeping base weld is priced closer to materials. Copper windings beat aluminum materially. Non-PCB oil beats PCB-suspect oil, because the disposal cost is real. Documented test results — oil analysis, turns ratio, power factor — raise the number because they let a downstream buyer put the unit back in service instead of rebuilding it. None of that testing is required to sell to us, though — it is upside, never a precondition.

Seattle Questions

When do I get paid?
Upfront, in full, before your equipment is loaded — wire, ACH or certified check. Not on delivery, not after inspection, not net thirty. We do not hold funds pending resale or testing at our yard.
Do I have to have the transformer tested before you will buy it?
No. We require no testing, no inspection report and no oil analysis to make or to honor an offer. We price from the nameplate and your photographs, and that number is not contingent on a test result or on what we find once the unit reaches us.
Is your offer contingent on anything?
Only on the equipment matching the nameplate and condition you described. There is no financing contingency, no inspection contingency and no testing contingency. We pay in full before loading, which is only possible because we are spending our own money and are not waiting on a downstream buyer in Washington or anywhere else.
Do I need to disconnect the transformer first?
Yes. A licensed electrician must de-energize, lock out and disconnect the unit before our crew handles it. In most of Washington we can coordinate that electrical work as part of the project if you would rather it be on one scope.
Should I drain the oil before you arrive?
No — please do not. Draining creates a hazardous waste stream that you then own, and a drained unit is worth less to us than a sealed one. Leave it as it is and let our crew handle containment.
