Buying Transformers in Montana

Utility territory and equipment supply

Distribution equipment in Montana comes off systems operated by NorthWestern Energy, Montana-Dakota Utilities, Flathead Electric Cooperative and their municipal and cooperative neighbours, which means most of what we see here is standard-voltage, well-documented and genuinely resaleable. Montana refinery and mine electrical rebuilds release large-frame units, and remote-site rigging is our cost, not yours

What generates surplus equipment here

oil production in the Bakken east of the state, mining and smelting, refining at Billings and Laurel, and agricultural processing Each of those situations releases transformers on a schedule that has nothing to do with the equipment market — a demolition mobilization, a service upgrade, an outage window — which is exactly when a buyer who can commit to a date matters more than one who can quibble over a price.

Freight lanes across Montana

I-90 and I-15 with Billings as our regional consolidation point We build routes rather than sending a truck for a single item, so a pickup in a remote part of the state is combined with other regional freight instead of being discounted for distance. Distance does not reduce your offer and the haul never appears on your invoice, because there is no invoice — you are paid, in full, before we load.

Removal scope in every county

Crane or boom truck, rigging crew, spill containment sized to the unit's oil volume, oversize and street-occupancy permits, escorts and heavy-haul trucking are all our cost. Conduit cut and capped, anchor bolts cut flush, pad left broom-clean. Nights, weekends and planned outage windows are available.

Equipment We Buy in Montana

180–240 units in inventory rotation

Padmount Transformers

Pad-mounted distribution transformers are the single most liquid item we buy. A dead-front loop-feed unit in the 75 to 2500 kVA range with a legible nameplate and a sound tank can be priced from photographs the same day.

75 kVA – 5000 kVA
300+ oil-filled units purchased annually

Oil-Filled Transformers

Liquid-filled units — mineral oil, silicone or ester — from 25 kVA pole-mounts up to 20 MVA power transformers. Oil is not a problem for us; containment, testing and disposal are part of what we do.

25 kVA – 20 MVA
120–160 dry-type units handled per year

Dry-Type Transformers

Ventilated, sealed and cast-coil dry-type units from 15 kVA control transformers up to 5000 kVA unit substation sections. Copper-wound units carry a materially higher offer than aluminum.

15 kVA – 5000 kVA
40–60 substation-class units per year

Substation Transformers

Station-class and power transformers from 1 MVA to 100 MVA, including units with load tap changers, radiator banks and conservator tanks. These are heavy-haul projects and we run them end to end.

1 MVA – 100 MVA
Lots of 10 to 400 units purchased at a time

Pole-Mount Transformers

Single-phase and three-phase overhead distribution transformers, 5 kVA to 500 kVA. This is a volume item — we buy them by the pallet and by the trailer load out of utility and co-op surplus programs.

5 kVA – 500 kVA
25–40 complete lineups per year

Unit Substations

Complete primary-transformer-secondary lineups: incoming section, transformer, and low-voltage switchgear or switchboard bolted as one assembly. We buy them whole and we buy them by the section.

300 kVA – 5000 kVA
