Selling a Transformer in Star

If you have a transformer to move in Star, the equipment itself is rarely the problem — the logistics are. We are a direct buyer, not a listing site or a broker: we price your unit against our own book, pay you upfront before we load, and send our own crane, riggers and heavy-haul truck to Star to take it out. Ratings from 15 kVA through 100 MVA, Ada County and everywhere else in Idaho.

Transformer supply across Idaho

Utility territory in and around Star is served by Idaho Power, Avista, Rocky Mountain Power, Idaho Falls Power, and the equipment those systems retire tends to be standard voltage-class distribution gear with good documentation. Beyond the utilities, Idaho generates transformer turnover through semiconductor manufacturing in the Boise area, food and potato processing statewide, phosphate operations in the southeast, and lumber in the panhandle. For freight we run I-84 and I-15 with Salt Lake City and Portland as our regional consolidation points. One more thing worth knowing: Idaho semiconductor expansion is displacing cast-coil and unit substation equipment, and hydro relicensing work moves station-class units.

A small community is not too small to sell

We regularly buy equipment out of communities the size of Star. Co-op service centers, grain and agricultural processing sites, small municipal utilities and rural industrial plants all accumulate transformers that nobody has ever offered a serious number on. Distance does not reduce our offer — we cover the freight and the rigging into Ada County the same way we would into a metro.

Lot buying and route consolidation

Where the economics genuinely improve for both of us is quantity. A pallet of pole-mount cans behind a service center, a row of retired padmounts along a fence line, a mixed pile of unknown units — aggregated, that is a trailer load worth real money, and we will send the equipment to load it.

Removal and Value

How a Star removal actually runs

The sequence is consistent. You send the nameplate and a few site photographs. We return a firm number, usually the same day. On acceptance we schedule against your window and send you insurance documentation and a bill of sale in advance. Our crew arrives in Star, cuts and caps conduit, breaks the unit loose from its pad or anchors, rigs and lifts it onto the trailer, and leaves the pad broom-clean with anchor bolts cut flush. Your funds go out before any of that happens — we do not load equipment we have not already paid for in full.

What sets your number in Star

Five things, in roughly this order: kVA rating, voltage class, winding material, fluid and condition. A 1000 kVA 12470–480V dead-front padmount with a legible nameplate and a sound tank is a resale asset and gets priced as one. The same rating with a cracked bushing and a weeping base weld is priced closer to materials. Copper windings beat aluminum materially. Non-PCB oil beats PCB-suspect oil, because the disposal cost is real. Documented test results — oil analysis, turns ratio, power factor — raise the number because they let a downstream buyer put the unit back in service instead of rebuilding it. None of that testing is required to sell to us, though — it is upside, never a precondition.

Star Questions

Do I need to disconnect the transformer first?
Yes. A licensed electrician must de-energize, lock out and disconnect the unit before our crew handles it. In most of Idaho we can coordinate that electrical work as part of the project if you would rather it be on one scope.
Should I drain the oil before you arrive?
No — please do not. Draining creates a hazardous waste stream that you then own, and a drained unit is worth less to us than a sealed one. Leave it as it is and let our crew handle containment.
Do you actually pay for the freight and rigging out of Star?
Yes, and it is not a discount buried in the offer. The crane or boom truck, the rigging crew, the permits and the heavy-haul trucking from Star are all our cost. You receive a net number for the equipment and you pay nothing for its removal.
How fast can you get a crew to Star?
For most of Idaho we schedule within one to two weeks of agreement, and we can work faster where a demolition or outage date requires it. Nights and weekends are available. If your deadline is tight, lead with the date when you call.
What do you need from me to make an offer?
A photograph of the nameplate is the single most useful thing, plus a wide shot showing where the unit sits and how a truck would reach it. Quantity, and whether the unit is working, de-energized or failed. If you have oil analysis or electrical test results, send those too — they can raise the offer, but they are never required.
